A New Camera and Photography with Kids

A few weeks ago, my sweet husband and boys surprised me with a new camera, a Cannon EOS Rebel T7. What a delight it was! My old Nikon D40 has been “glitchy” for a while now, and I really haven’t been able to use it much lately. I also have a very old version of the iPhone (which I actually like ;), but my iPhone camera is not great, so my photography quality has not been where I would like it lately. To be honest, I really have a hard time using my iPhone as a camera anyways and holding it up in front of our children’s faces all the time just never really feels natural to me when photographing them. I most definitely prefer holding a real camera in my hands when photographing. The artistic side of me feels much more alive this way, and our children actually seem to enjoy being photographed with a real camera, which is a big plus for me, since I absolutely LOVE photographing our lives together.

So far, I am really loving the Cannon EOS Rebel T7. It is super user-friendly, a great size for me and the photo quality is beautiful. I can also take video with it, but I haven’t explored that yet. I have been having a lot of fun getting to know this camera these days and experimenting with the different photography modes. So far, I would definitely recommend this camera to other beginner to intermediate photographers. I am by no means a professional photographer, but I have taken a few classes and done some photography reading/watching over the years. Most importantly, I have always enjoyed photography as an artistic expression, and I find it both a very exciting and calming endeavor.

Our oldest who is currently 9 years old has also become interested in photography lately, as he has been watching me learn the new camera. I have started teaching him some basic camera skills, and he is starting to practice photography on my old Nikon camera. It doesn’t bother him that it is a bit “glitchy”, and it really is a great camera for beginners. It has been so fun watching his new budding hobby start to blossom!

I am so excited to share more photos of our journey of learning and growing together at home here on the journal, our Instagram page and in any future guides we create for our online shop with the new camera. And perhaps, he will be sharing some of his photos here too! We hope you enjoy!

Warmly,

Therie

Congratulations on your new camera. However, I enjoy viewing your old photos as well as your new ones. The photos of your family and of where you live are extraordinary. As to the photos, they’re an education; the lighting, the shadows, the subjects, and your interpretations of scenes and people are always relaxing and peaceful photos to me.
