Celebrating Finley

We had such a beautiful day celebrating our precious Finley turning ONE! The entire day was focused on him, and he had so much fun! He had all of his favorite foods: breakfast-our homemade pancakes and breakfast sausage, lunch-roasted sweet potatoes, dinner-spaghetti. I made him pumpkin muffins with a dollop of homemade frosting on top for his birthday sweet treat. It was so fun watching him enjoy it! We opened presents, played at the park, and enjoyed spending the day with both sets of grandparents at our house. It was such a special day! Enjoy the photos from his special day!

Finley is ONE

My serene and precious Finley, my beautiful home birth baby boy, I remember your birth like it was just yesterday. It was so beautiful and peaceful, and so much more than I could have ever imagined.  And now you have traveled one full cycle around the sun. Today, you are ONE.

This year has flown by at such a speed that my love-filled heart sheds a tear. How on earth are you one, my sweet baby boy?

At the same time, my love-filled heart is overjoyed that you are now ONE. My have we all enjoyed watching you grow and learn and play, especially your big brother. Your kind spirit shines so brightly and you are truly one of the most serene souls I know. You are wise beyond your years, fully present in the moment and love unconditionally, and I am forever grateful to be called "momma" by you.

Happy first birthday precious boy! Momma loves you more than you will ever know.

Finley is 11 months

Oh my, how is our serene little baby already almost 1 year old. I cannot believe that his first full cycle around the sun is almost complete. We will def. be soaking up this last month with our precious baby boy before he officially becomes a "toddler".

Stats:
No new stats this month, but he is getting bigger and bigger.

Likes: being outside, balls of all kinds, pushing the kitchen stool and walking, cruising, standing up, sticks, being with his family, smiling, clapping, being held or worn in a wrap, playing with Noah and Daddy, eating food, grunting, reading

Dislikes: getting dressed and diaper changes

Sleep: He is still taking 2 naps a day, a morning nap around 9ish and an afternoon nap around 1or 1:30ish. Both naps are about 45 mins-2 hours each. He is ready for bed at night around 6:30/7pm and wakes around 6:30-7am. We are still co sleeping at night, and he still likes to nurse a few times during the night. We did remove the crib from his room this past weekend since he wasn't using it, and we put the floor bed in his room instead (the one Noah had before his bunk bed). So far, we are experimenting with nap time, and once he is really comfortable with napping in there, I will start putting him to bed at night on his floor bed. He also really enjoys playing on the floor bed with Noah. ;)

Foodie Baby: Finn LOVES to eat still and is such a great eater!! He is eating 3 meals a day as well as 1-2 snacks. He is still nursing during the day and at night too. Finn is continuing to learn how to hold his sippy cup solo and drink water from it. He can also drink from a regular cup when I hold it for him.

Language/Development: His newest development this month in terms of language was his grunting. He now can point (with an open hand, not pointer finger) and grunt to things that he wants/needs (ex: water, toys, etc), and it actually works quite well for him with communicating. We usually always know what he wants/needs these days. He also started signing "eat", "more" and "all done/finished" and he can wave. I will try to capture these on video and post them soon. He still babbles a lot and can say "dada", "Mmmm", "Yum" and "Momma!". He is understanding so much of what we say these days too! Sweet boy started cruising last week and walking while pushing our kitchen stool. Shouldn't be too much longer before he is standing solo and walking. Coleman and I better get ready!

Teeth: No new teeth this month. He still has 8 chompers.

Next month this precious little boy turns ONE!! Til then!

Finley is 10 Months

This little boy's light shines so bright these days! He can be found smiling most of the day, and his joy is simply contagious!

Stats:
No new stats this month, but he is growing by the day!

Likes: being outside, sticks, being with his family, smiling, crawling, pulling up, clapping, playing with balls and things with wheels, being held or worn in a wrap, chasing after Noah, playing with Daddy, eating food, babbling (aka singing;)

Dislikes: getting dressed and diaper changes, not knowing where Momma is

Sleep: He is still taking 2 naps a day, a morning nap around 9ish and an afternoon nap around 1or 1:30ish. Both naps are about 1-2 hours each. He is ready for bed at night around 6:30/7pm and wakes around 6:30-7am. We are still co sleeping at night, and he still likes to nurse a few times during the night.

Foodie Baby: Finn LOVES to eat still and is such a great eater!! He is eating 3 meals a day as well as 1-2 snacks. He is still nursing during the day and at night too. Finn is also starting to learn to drink water from a sippy cup.

Language/Development: Finn babbles all the time and can say "dada", "Mmmm" and "Yum". I am still waiting on "momma" ;). I am also teaching him baby sign language, and he sometimes will sign "more". He is understanding more and more each day, and it is so much fun to watch his little brain work these days! Finn is crawling all over the place and can pull up to his knees and to standing if he is holding on to something. No cruising quite yet.

Teeth: No new teeth this month. He still has 8 chompers!

Til next month!

How We Learn

We PLAY

We READ

We run BAREFOOT IN CREEKS

We COOK

We GARDEN

We EXPRESS OURSELVES CREATIVELY and ARTISTICALLY

We EXPLORE

We ENJOY NATURE

We ARE KIND

We LOVE

We LIVE

Our boys learn all the time. We do not do school or a formal curriculum right now. Perhaps we will eventually. But for now, we are taking learning one year at a time, and our boys are currently thriving by being at home and doing interest based learning. Our ultimate goal is do to whatever works best for our boys...whatever helps encourage them to be free thinkers, full of imagination, passionate, kind, loving, a lover of nature, a life-long reader and a life-long learner.

For now, this is how we learn,  this is how we live. :)

Finley the Foodie Baby

At 9 months old, Finley most definitely can be described as a "Foodie Baby". He LOVES to eat, and eats just about anything and everything in sight these days.

I approached food very differently with Finley than I did with Noah as a young baby. I did not make baby purees for Finley like I did for Noah. Instead, I choose the "Baby Led Weaning" approach with him. Wow, what a difference it made.

Finley eats three meals a day with us as a family (and sometimes 1-2 snacks per day), and he basically eats everything we eat during meal times which makes my job so much easier. I do not have to make him something separate at mealtimes. His serving is just a bit smaller, and we cut his pieces up smaller than ours. He truly enjoys meal time and is such an adventurous eater so far. He will try anything and usually gobbles it all up!

It is so amazing to watch him use his little fingers in the pincer grasp to pick up food and put it directly into his mouth. There also is no frustration during meal time (except the process of getting him into his high chair ;) When the boy is ready to eat, he is ready! Mealtime is a bit messy though. ;) With Noah and the purees, he would get frustrated if I wasn't feeding him fast enough, and he always wanted to eat my food instead of his....hint, hint baby led weaning! But as a first time mom, I was nervous about choking, gagging and food reactions so I would only introduce one food puree every few days before adding a new food. With Finn, we did not waste anytime. I already knew he was sensitive to dairy and corn and we are a gluten-free family, so these foods have not been offered to him so I haven't had to worry about reactions there. He has been fine with eggs and nuts, and we haven't done raw honey yet since it is not recommended until a child is at least 1 year old.

He eats various meats (ground beef, ground pork, chicken, etc), gluten-free grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits. He will eat both raw and cooked fruits and vegetables. Some of his favorite foods include: local grass fed ground beef, almond milk yogurt, sautéed summer squash, bananas, momma's morning oatmeal, waffles, almond butter, avocado and bacon.

All in all, baby led weaning has been a great experience for our family! For anyone out there who is considering giving it a try, I would say go for it. It truly has made Finley into a real "Foodie Baby" who loves to eat and will try just about anything!! Happy Eating!:)
